Spirit, Soul and Body

Paul reveals to us that we are a three part human being.

1 Thes. 5:23

"Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."

According to Paul we are; spirit, soul and body. We have the spirit of life (Gen.2:7, Jam.2:26) that God breathes into every living being that animates the body with life, we have the fleshly body (2 Peter 1:13-14) in which the spirit and soul dwells and we have the eternal part of our being, the soul, the thinking and feeling part of us that though man may destroy the body, he can’t touch this part of us (Mat. 10:28)

In the gospel of John, Jesus reveals to His disciples that the time of His death and resurrection are near and He uses an allegory to do this.

John 12:23-24,

"And Jesus answered them, 'The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.'"

Paul likewise uses this method to describe what happens to the body at death before the resurrection.

1Co 15:35-38,

"But someone will ask, 'How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?' You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body."

So when we die, our bodies decay and becomes dust again (Gen. 3:19). But what becomes of our soul, the eternal part of our being as our physical body is in the ground?
