I would like to share with you a sermon from Doug Hamilton, preacher at the Junction City Church of Christ, Junction City, KS.

Let’s begin by talking about:

Surveillance by Others

Surveillance by Others

You Are Being Watched

That’s not paranoia, that’s a fact.

On any given day, the average American is being surveilled dozens of times by numerous groups and individuals. Each American is captured on security cameras 238 times a day. The average American is filmed 160 times a day while driving in their car, [have you seen all those cameras at every intersection?], 40 times at their job, 24 times while shopping [you go to Walmart, SMILE, they’re watching you], and 14 times taking a walk through your neighborhood (Melore, 2020). [That’s not counting what they’re doing with the technology in your home. You know your little Alexia box you think is cool, Hey Alexia, ah order some soup from this restaurant. That’s being tracked. They can actually listen on your device.] Since 2005, under the Patriot Act, the National Security Administration (NSA) [has] been collecting all our texts, emails, and calls, sweeping them up in what is called metadata, and storing it on hard drives (Cohn, 2022).

If you use Google, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, TikTok, or nearly any of the social sites, they are tracking your every move (Vigderman, 2022). We are clearly being watched through our phones, on the public streets, in our cars, on our computers, and some even in their home. The FBI, CIA, NSA, ATF, and IRS [, if you have 3 initials in your organization, they’re probably spying on you right now], sometimes legally and other times illegally. We are being surveilled. [If you have your cell phone on with you, they can actually listen to everything we’re saying right now. And that’s good, because we’re going to have a 4 alarm Gospel presentation… So if you’re listening to this… and I guess that’s one way to boost your attendance in worship… We are being watched all the time. Both in and out of our home.]

But (then there is A surveillance so big, let me tell you, there is something going on right now, as we speak. There is a technology that dwarfs every single one of these, by far. It is watching all these other systems. It is bigger than all of them combined.)

This morning’s lesson is on Spiritual Surveillance

I mention this because this system is more powerful than all these others put together. This surveillance system not only sees everything you do online, on your websites, your emails, phone calls and monitors your conversations [just like these other systems do], but [it also] watches your entire life, both publicly and privately. It is called the Spiritual-Surveillance and is carried out by God. HIS technology can determine with a [perfect] rate of accuracy [even] the thoughts of a person’s mind. God’s surveillance watches all of us 24/7, monitoring everything we do. [Including the thought you have right now, "Oh, you’re taking it to extremes", God heard that! He knows that!]

You see (God is omniscient, God is omnipresent. That means, He know all, He sees all, He is wherever you’re at… He sees it!)

This is interesting (You might say, come on Scott, come on… You better wrestle with this one, because God isn’t God, if God isn’t this. omniscient & omnipresent)

(Now let’s look at a little greasy programmer somewhere, out at one of these tech places. They type up a program, they put in little keystrokes that allow them to monitor you. They write a program for that. Do you think they get a group of chimpanzees and they just hit the keyboard until something comes up? No it’s programmed to do that exact thing. Including feeding back the information to the designer of that program. That’s how it works.)

(Ok, so how does God know what we’re doing? God is a programmer too. Your DNA is likened to digital software that converts to 3D objects. That’s what they boil it down to. It’s the most complex thing ever written. And men like Bill Gates and other famous programmers, they look at human DNA, which has billions & billions of sugar, phosphate, & base nucleotides that form a double helix that makes up the code of a DNA molecule, in awe. It is a genius program, it literally does everything for your body. God made that. You don’t own the patent for DNA, nobody does, God does, He designed it. And man will scratch their head until Jesus comes back to know how that stuff runs. If man can code programs that can track you right now, you don’t think God also has stuff that report back to Him? That is just one of the ways God is tracking us right now.)

(And this surveillance system knows your exact thoughts. In fact, it even knows what you’re going to think. That’s some powerful software. "Well, I’m thinking about doing that." God doesn’t go, "ah oh"… You know this sound has never come out of God’s mouth: cover mouth with hand & <gasp>. You think that took God by surprise? No! He knows what you have need of before you even ask Him! And He wrote into our software, called our DNA, and it can easily report back to Him exactly what’s going on with you. And me!)
(God sees all, He knows all. He’s watching all people all of the time.)

Hebrews 4:13

And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

God saw it. We don’t have to say, "I wish walls could talk." Walls don’t have to talk with God. God sees through walls and He knows what His software is sending back to Him. And if we’re doing stuff we shouldn’t do, God knows.

Proverbs 5:21

For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the Lord, And He watches all his paths.

Proverbs 15:3

"The eyes of the Lord are in every place, Watching the evil and the good."

With Spiritual-Surveillance, God saw it all, including those websites you’ve been watching, the way you talked about your boss behind his back, that television commercial with the woman in the bathing suit that caught your eye!

Job asked in:

Job 31:4,

"Does [God] not see my ways and number all my steps?"

The answer to the question is ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, WITHOUT A DOUBT, YES!!! He knows all that we do, all that we say, and all that we think. Because if God doesn’t see, then God is not God. God’s a liar. And God cannot lie… If God is going to be God.     I’m going to trust the one who wrote the program that caused my existence!

If you are a child of God and believe what the Bible teaches, then you know God is not insignificant like the NSA surveillance, but a billion times more advanced. It doesn’t matter if you are a Christian or not, for he sees all and knows all.

2 Chronicles 16:9

"For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His…”

The typical world view of God is a God waiting with lightning bolt in hand, for you to mess up. But that’s NOT what this passage says. Look: "For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His…” Support NOT Zap.

Job 26:6

"Naked is Sheol (the grave, hell, pit) before Him, And Abaddon (the abyss, bottomless pit, place of destruction, realm of the dead) has no covering."

He sees even there.

Job 34:21

"For His eyes are upon the ways of a man, And He sees all his steps."

Do you remember that heavy person, the one that you thought negatively about when you saw them? And you’re probably overweight too, like me! Remember how you misjudged them in your heart? Hi, Spiritual-Surveillance saw you from heaven. He also knows how hard they struggled their whole life with over-eating. He knows their soul just like He knows your own, for He is always watching.

Do you remember that co-worker that you spoke badly about to the others last week? I bet you forgot that God heard what you said and He wasn’t laughing, but saddened. He wants you to know that co-worker doesn’t have a friend in this world and was hoping you might [change] that by simply being a good ear to comfort.

Do you remember that guy that you cursed on the road when he cut you off in traffic? God was with you and heard all the choice words you had for that careless driver who just happened to be made in the likeness and image of God. Would we have reacted differently had we remembered the He is always watching? Would we change the way we’re walking?

David says:

Psalm 119:168

"I keep Your precepts and Your testimonies, For all my ways are before You."

Jeremiah 16:17

"For My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from My face, nor is their iniquity concealed from My eyes."

Jeremiah 32:19

"…whose eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, giving to everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds…"

God is watching, and it doesn’t matter how we try to frame it. It doesn’t matter how much we dress up on Sunday. Or how many Hallelujahs or amens we say, the real test is, do you believe God is watching, that there is a spiritual surveillance? Because if we don’t, we’re never going to change.

Brothers and sisters, I do not write this in exemption, for we are all guilty of failing to remember this, for God is watching all of us all the time. I think that’s a primary reason why we stumble. Because we don’t think God is watching at that moment. Otherwise you would never do that. In fact, picture it this way, take your ugliest, darkest moment, that thing you struggle with. Do you invite your friends from church, your brothers & sisters in Christ, and do that in front of them? Why not? Because it would be shameful. Well, ok, but God is always there. You see the difference? If you always want to live a righteous life then we must always believe first and foremost that God is this… spiritual surveillance.

Psalm 33:13,14

"The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men; 14 From His dwelling place He looks out On all the inhabitants of the earth…"

Psalm 121:4

He "…neither slumbers nor sleeps."

Psalm 32:8

"I will counsel you with My eye upon you."

God is watching!

We should be concerned that all the media platforms, authority figures, and agencies (with 3 letters) are watching us. Because they’re not God! On the other hand, the information they have is nothing compared to what God has seen.

You know we got to make sure we don’t live the life of a hypocrite. Here’s how we live the life of a hypocrite. That word hypocrite [in the Greek] is hypo -for- under, & crites -for- mask… hupo - crites. You know how you say "actor" in the 1st century? Hypocrites, it means under the mask. One actor would play many parts holding up a different mask for each part. You never know who the real actor was "under the mask." That why they called them hypocrites.

Well, God knows who is under the mask.

Three times in Matthew 6, the hypocrite who lived a secret double-life in his charity, prayers and fastings never fooled God. Jesus said we are to carry these out as if before the all-seeing God "who sees what is done in secret" (4, 6 and 18). God can see under the masks of men and women throughout the earth. He literally sees all. He knows what you are thinking! Hosea reminded us in

Hosea 7:2

"Now their deeds are all around them; They are before My face."

When we keep in mind that God has us on surveillance, then watch your walk change.

God is not nearly concerned about the outward man we portray in public worship, but the inward man of the private life. We never want to "outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness" (Matthew 23:28).

In Closing

The challenge this week (and the rest of our lives) is to completely hold in your mind this important attribute of God. Omniscience. Really focus on the fact that He is really watching us and knows our every move. Imbed deeply in our minds the biblical fact that He is omniscient at the core. If we will just really focus on this one quality of God, then I believe we will live a better life for Him.

Invitation

We are extending the invitation, now, to anyone who is subject to it. Come,… while we stand and sing.
