Hebrews – Not Acquainted with Righteousness

A milk diet is limited

Hebrews 5:13-6:3 (WEB)
13 For everyone who lives on milk is not experienced in the word of righteousness, for he is a baby.

There are two levels of experience in Christ. Immature (baby, infant) Christians and Mature (full grown) Christians. And, “by reason of time,” every Christian should move from the immature stage to maturity. From feeding on “milk” to “solid food.”

14 But solid food is for those who are full grown, who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.

How do we move on to maturity? Those who by reason of use… use of what? Use the “milk” you are fed from the Scriptures to “exercise” your senses to “discern good and evil.”

We don’t instinctively, intrinsically, know good from evil. It’s something WE MUST LEARN. And only the scriptures CAN reveal the difference.

Press on to perfection

Hebrews 6:1-3 (WEB)
1 Therefore leaving the doctrine of the first principles of Christ, let us press on to perfection--not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, of faith toward God, 2 of the teaching of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

To grow Peter states that we should become “like newborn babes and feed on the pure milk of the word that we may grow…” We need to be able to teach others the elementary teaching so we may grow.

3 This will we do, if God permits.

When we have command of the elementary teachings we need to move on to solid food.

1st the solid teaching in Hebrews
2nd to the righteousness of God revealed in the gospel of Paul in the book of Romans.
