A Study of Hebrews

The writer of Hebrews, having compared the Son to angels in his first argument, showing Christ’s supremacy over them, and giving us a wealth of information about Jesus in doing so, now moves on to compare Jesus to Moses (Heb 3:1).

The writer tells us (Heb 3:3) that “[Jesus] has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who built the house has more honor than the house.” Then he notes that “every house is built by someone;…” Jesus is identified here as the builder of God’s house and that is the reason given that he is worthy of more honor than Moses who was a faithful servant of God’s house (Heb 3:2,5).

The writer adds, “but he who built all things is God,” reminding us of the deity of Jesus as the creator who built everything (Heb 1:2,10).

This is the design principle. We can know plainly that there is a God by the things he has built. Because he has made it plain for us to see him in his creation… so that we are without excuse from knowing that God exists (Rom 1:18-20).

The writer has already implied that Jesus is a builder when he identified him as “the high priest of our confession.” (Heb 3:1). The confession is that Jesus is the Son of God, upon which Jesus said he would build His church (Matt 16:18).

“Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, Christ is faithful as a Son… and we are his house,” (the one he built, Heb 3:5,6).
